Five days driving south from Marrakech through the High Atlas, the Kasbahs of the Draa Valley, the Dades and Todra gorges, and into the Erg Chebbi sand dunes at Merzouga.
The Road South
The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga covers approximately 560 kilometres one way, climbing over the High Atlas at Tizi n'Tichka (2,260m) before dropping into the pre-Saharan hammada — a stony desert plateau that gives way to the iconic sand dunes of Erg Chebbi only in the last stretch. Spread over five days, this is not a rushed route. There is time to stop at carpet sellers on the mountain pass, to spend two hours exploring a UNESCO ksar without feeling the driver is waiting, and to walk into the dunes slowly enough to notice what silence actually sounds like.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
- Day 1 — Marrakech to Ouarzazate (200km, about 4hrs including stops): leave by 8am to hit Tizi n'Tichka pass before midday heat. Stop at the pass for photographs and, if you want, to walk through the Berber carpet sellers' stalls — prices are fixed by eye contact and negotiation starts at around double the fair value. Arrive Ouarzazate early afternoon. Visit Kasbah Taourirt (20 MAD entry) and, if time allows, Atlas Studios where sets from Gladiator and Game of Thrones still stand (60 MAD entry, tours run 8am-6pm).
- Day 2 — Ait Ben Haddou and Dades Gorge: the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO since 1987) is 30km west of Ouarzazate. Spend 2 hours walking the site — cross the river on the stone stepping path, climb to the agadir granary at the top for views over the Draa plain. Then drive east through Skoura's palm groves and oasis to Boumalne Dades (130km). In the late afternoon, drive the 25km up the gorge road to the famous S-bend hairpins. Overnight in Boumalne Dades.
- Day 3 — Todra Gorge to Merzouga: drive 50km east to Tinghir and up the Todra Valley to the gorge entrance. The walls reach 300m vertical here and are only 10m apart at the narrowest point. Walk 1 hour through the gorge. Then drive to Merzouga (120km, 2hrs). Arrive by 4pm for camel trekking at sunset — standard 1.5hr ride to a desert camp, run by most riad owners and cost around 350-500 MAD per person.
- Day 4 — Erg Chebbi and Khamlia: wake before 6am for the sunrise on the dunes. After breakfast at camp, visit Khamlia village (15km south of Merzouga) where the Gnawa community performs traditional music at most of the small cafes — 30-50 MAD per person for a session. Drive north to Erfoud (50km), known for fossil marble workshops where trilobites and ammonites are cut and polished (free to visit, no obligation to buy). The Ziz Gorge overlook is a further 20km north.
- Day 5 — Return to Marrakech: the drive back is 8 hours minimum. Some travellers fly from Ouarzazate (RAM seasonal service, around 800 MAD) to save the day. If driving, leave Erfoud or Merzouga by 7am and reach Marrakech by 4-5pm via the same Tizi n'Tichka route.

I had seen hundreds of photos of the Sahara. None of them prepared me for the cold at night. We were in the dunes in October and by midnight it was genuinely freezing. The camp had blankets but bring a warm layer no matter what month you go.
Hiring a Private Driver vs. Organised Tour
A private driver for the full five-day circuit costs 350-500 USD total for the car, regardless of how many passengers (typically up to 5 in a comfortable 4x4). That works out to 70-100 USD per person for a group of five, which is often cheaper than a budget organised tour once you factor in the flexibility to stop where you want and leave when you are ready. Ask your Marrakech riad for driver recommendations — a good driver doubles as a guide for the historical sites and charges around 50 MAD extra per stop for commentary. Organised tours from Marrakech start at around 1,800 MAD per person for three days and scale up with accommodation quality.
Desert Camp: Luxury vs. Standard
Standard shared desert camps near Merzouga cost 350-500 MAD per person including dinner, overnight, and breakfast. Luxury private camps with proper beds and en-suite tents run 1,200-2,500 MAD per person. The main practical difference is noise — shared camps can be lively until late. Both offer the same sunrise. Book through your driver or riad rather than walk-in; prices are 20-30% lower.
